Interview series: Andrea’s ITI Scholarship experience

Andrea Roccuzzo

Every year in June, the ITI opens its Scholarship application portal. We took this opportunity to ask one of our former Scholars, Andrea Roccuzzo from Italy, about his experience, his daily work and what he liked most about it. He started his Scholarship year in January 2022 at the ITI Scholarship Center in Zurich, Switzerland. Andrea was also recently awarded the 2023 André Schroeder Research Prize for Clinical Research for his study entitled Narrow diameter implants to replace congenital missing maxillary lateral incisors: A 1-year prospective, controlled clinical study.

What are the three most memorable things you will take away from your Scholarship year?

-The great team I was able to join
-The international exposure associated with this prestigious Scholarship
-The unique mix of clinical activity oriented to research

Why did you choose this particular Scholarship Center?

The whole team was extremely supportive from the start! Indeed, I was even able to co-author an important long-term clinical study in a top-ranked peer-reviewed Journal. This would have never been possible without the unique environment and the tremendous support of the Scholarship Center director, Prof. Jung, and the rest of the faculty!

What were your plans for the time after your Scholarship when you returned home?

This Scholarship has been an important step forward in my academic career. Indeed, thanks to it, at the end of my Scholarship, I was appointed as faculty member at the University of Bern.

Would you recommend our Scholarship program to other young professionals?

Definitely. Yes!!!! This is truly a unique experience that allows young and motivated professionals to get involved within the ITI family and to work closely with top-level clinicians and researchers in the field of implant dentistry. At the end of this great journey, most of my colleagues had turned into real friends!
